FROM DIVISION TO UNITY – 60 YEARS OF GERMANY

A look at the history of divided Germany through the songs that marked the East and the West. Nostalgia isn’t always sad.

The Two Germanys in a Few Hit Songs 2009
Director: Hans Sparschuh, Rainer Burmeister.  Year:2009  Duration: 45 min.

Among the ruins of defeated Germany, the popular songs that talked of love and romance soothed the hearts of the disillusioned Germans. But they also reflected the spirit of the moment and, in the case of Germany, the place. During the 60s, while the West Germans were starting to travel to Southern Europe and sang to Capri, the dream of workers in the East was Havana or Sarataov. Unlike the hits in the Anglo-Saxon world, these songs born on both sides of the Wall didn’t cross borders. The documentary shows us the stars of the East and West, called Roland Kaiser, Frank Schnöbel, Gitte Haenning or Karen Gott ...

Germanys, Germanys – Has The Wall Really Fallen?
Director: Jan Peter.  Year: 2009.   Duration: 40 min.

Twenty years after the fall of the Wall, the visible traces of the division of Germany have been erased. In the East, the “henhouse” buildings have disappeared, the city centres have renewed their façades, while in the West there are so few traces of the Wall that they are considering the possibility of building a section in Berlin for the tourists. Inside the government, an East German chancellor is running the federal government, and the surviving party of the DGR has elected representatives in the Länder in West Germany. A new generation about to reach adulthood only knows of the Wall through the stories of their elders or from history books. But in 20 years, one in five West Germans has never gone to East Germany. The statements gathered in this documentary show how poorly the citizens of both zones know each other and how little they have progressed in getting to know those with whom they are supposedly forming a new people.
